About Us

Windermere Country Living is a small editorial magazine devoted to one of the most loved corners of England — the Lake District. We write for travellers who care about where they stay, not just where they go. Our focus is the rentals, country estates, and slow-travel experiences that make a Lake District holiday genuinely worth the journey.

The magazine was founded by a small team of writers and photographers who have spent the better part of two decades visiting, working in, and writing about Cumbria. We don't review every cottage on the market. We don't take advertising from rental agencies. We write about the properties and the experiences we think are interesting, and we trust our readers to make up their own minds.

Our editor

The magazine is edited by James R. Whitfield, a writer based between London and the Lakes, with twenty years of writing on travel, interiors, and the English countryside behind him. He spends as much time in Cumbria as the publishing schedule allows, and most of the photography on this site is his own.

How we work

We publish new pieces several times a month, with longer features running in the spring and autumn issues. Everything you read here is written by people who have actually been to the place or stayed in the property. We don't aggregate. We don't rewrite press releases. If a piece appears on Windermere Country Living, someone on our team has done the work behind it.

We're always happy to hear from readers. You can reach the editorial team at [email protected] with story ideas, corrections, or questions about anything we've published.
